You offer Express everywhere, but a carrier won't run it to one country — or the economics don't work there. You want that one method gone for that one country, and everything else untouched. Here's how, without carving up your shipping zones.
The native way
Shopify's shipping zones let you set different rates per group of countries. For "this country pays a different price", that's the right native tool and you don't need anything else.
Where it breaks
Zones are about pricing a rate per zone, not hiding one method for one country, and the difference bites as soon as your needs get specific:
- All-or-nothing per zone. To remove Express from one country you either delete it from a whole zone (losing it for every country in that zone) or split the zone and maintain two parallel rate tables — which drift out of sync the first time you edit one and not the other.
- No second condition. "Hide Express to Australia only over 20 kg" or "only for PO boxes" is a country plus another condition. Zones can't express a combination; they only know the destination.
- No preview. You rearrange zones and hope the right buyer sees the right thing — with no way to check a specific address first.
The safe way: a rule you can read, preview and watch
Hiding one method for one country is a sentence:
Hides Express when the country is AU.
Written by the Ruleproof engine — the same code compiled into your checkout.
Written by the rule engine itself, so the sentence and the checkout behaviour are one thing. And because it's a rule, not a zone:
- Combine conditions. Add weight, cart total, postcode or product as extra clauses — "hide Express to Australia over 20 kg" is one rule.
- Preview it. Enter a test address in that country and watch Express disappear, while a domestic address keeps it — before a real buyer meets the rule.
- Watch before you trust. Monitor mode records what the rule would have done to your real orders, so you switch it on with evidence, not a guess.
Which should you use?
If you just need different prices per region, native shipping zones are the right tool. If you need to hide a specific method for specific countries — especially combined with weight, cart total or address — that's a checkout rule, and Ruleproof lets you write it as a sentence, preview it, and monitor it first. The free plan runs one live rule on your real store so you can judge it on your own traffic.
